If you check Twitter, or idiotic "I'm gonna start a website full of opinions and stolen re-written news items" like Decider and Newser and something called THE CUT, the spin is that ARETHA wrote "Natural Woman," or, hell, if she didn't, it doesn't matter because that song would've been a hit if she just sang the phone book, or "BLAH BLAH BLAH."

What IS the point here? To further bury the memory of an obscure songwriter named Gerry Goffin? The average person doesn't even know his name. They know who Carole King is (the former Carol Klein).
As for "Natural Woman," who knows whether people generally know that Carole King wrote it? They know she wrote sappier stuff like "You've Got a Friend" and "So Far Away." Maybe they think Aretha wrote "Natural Woman." But why not give a writer some credit? Why in this blubbering rush to show how cool you are and how much soul you think you have, your appreciation for the great Aretha has to belittle Gerry Goffin?

Do you notice that Carole King has no problem crediting Gerry Goffin? Maybe she's an OLD SCHOOL Natural Woman. She's not on the staff of THE CUT, where the idea seems to be to cut the penis off and disregard what men do, because it's all about WOMEN WOMEN WOMEN WOMEN WOMEN WOMEN WOMEN. EMPOWERING WOMEN WOMEN WOMEN WOMEN WOMEN.
Yes, you can't celebrate WOMEN without giving a man a kick in the balls.
Do you think Aretha Franklin never said a kind word about white Jewish Jerry Wexler?
Jerry Wexler, a Altantic, did something that Columbia couldn't do: Make Aretha a star. How did HE do that? By finding a way to make her gospel and R&B beloved by ALL races and ALL people, male and female. No exclusion. He did it by working with an Arab named Ahmet Ertegun, who ALSO had a feel for black music, even if he wasn't black either.
Wexler told Goffin-King to write a song for Aretha based on the phrase "Natural Woman." Which sounded better than "Natural Childbirth" or "Natural Born Killer." But it was up to Goffin to use his MALE INTUITION and his own sensitivity (men have some) to come up with the brilliant words. And no, Aretha singing "BLAH BLAH BLAH" would not cut it.
How do we know this? Because Aretha sang hundreds of songs and they weren't all hits. In fact, the average person could probably only name TWO: "RESPECT" and "NATURAL WOMAN." So get off the big fat merry-go-round and stop the SPIN of Gerry Goffin not mattering. Is this what writers have to do now? Write any kind of hype and bilge to get click money?
